Senate Condemns Recent Killings In Southern Kaduna

The Senate has condemned the recent killings of no fewer than 808 indigenes across 4 Local Government Areas of Kaduna State by Fulani herdsmen. In a motion sponsored by Sen. Danjuma La’ah (PDP: Kaduna South) at the plenary session of January 10th 2017, the lawmaker described the killings of citizens in Southern Kaduna as amounting to a violation of the right to life, security of human persons, dignity and property in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), African Charter on Human and People’s Right 1986 and the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights 1976.

Sen. La’ah elaborated that the incident commenced on December 23rd 2016, when armed herdsmen attacked the community injuring 57 people and destroying properties with an estimated worth of 5.5 billion naira. He expressed dismay over the incessant killings saying that the collective humanity of Nigeria is being debased and called on the Federal Government to take urgent measures to prevent further attacks.

Consequently, the Senate agreed to set up an Ad-hoc Committee to investigate the causes of the killings in Southern Kaduna.
