Speaker of the House of Representatives Condemns Killings in Shasha Market, Oyo State

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has condemned the killings and destruction of properties in Shasha market, Ibadan, Oyo State and the rising spate of inter-ethnic crisis across the country.

In his remark at the plenary session of Tuesday, 16 February 2021, Hon. Gbajabiamila noted that the House of Representatives will work to prevent the re-occurrence of similar incidents by aligning with the initiative of the President, Muhammadu Buhari to constitute a Committee led by the National Security Adviser, Maj. General Mohammed Babagana Monguno to hold peace and unity consultations with Governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies and other groups across the Federation in order to enact resolutions aimed at peace building.

In view of the President’s initiative, Hon. Gbajabiamila stated that the House of Representatives will also constitute a working group to participate in these consultations. He called on the Nigeria Police Force to conduct thorough investigations into the recent violence in Oyo State and further urged lawmakers to desist from defamatory and inciting statements capable of threatening the nation’s peace and stability.

The Committee on Police Affairs and Justice have been mandated to communicate the position of the House of Representatives on the said issue to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu.
