Security Sector Reform Tops Agenda Of The 9th Senate

The President of the Senate, Sen. Ahmad Lawan (APC: Yobe) has reiterated that the 9th Senate will prioritize reforms that focus on reviewing and improving Nigeria’s security architecture through relevant legislation that seeks to strengthen the security sector and address the recurrent menace of banditry and kidnapping in the country.

 

Speaking at the Senate plenary session of Wednesday, 10 July 2019, Sen. Lawan reiterated its commitment to tackle the ongoing security crisis after  the presentation of two separate motions bordering on armed banditry, kidnapping and terrorism sponsored by Senators Ibrahim Gobir (APC: Sokoto) and Musa Sani(APC: Niger) respectively.

 

At the presentation, both lawmakers expressed concerns over the continuous security challenges and attacks by bandits in towns, villages and communities across several States in the country despite security operations and surveillance. The lawmakers further noted that the attacks had greatly affected economic activities and displaced thousands of citizens. He then called on the Senate to embark on holistic legislative interventions.
