PLAC convened a Multi-Stakeholder Roundtable on 26 November 2019 in Abuja.  This roundtable was held within the 16 Days of Activism against gender based violence commemorated worldwide beginning 25th November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10th December (Human Rights Day). The purpose of the convening was to discuss the use of special measures such as gender quotas in the improvement of women’s political representation; to share findings on possible legislative proposals on special measures; and discuss their practicability within Nigeria’s political and electoral system. The meeting was attended by a wide range of participants including the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dame Pauline Tallen, the House Chair of the Women in Parliament Committee, Hon. Taiwo Oluga and the House Chair of the Electoral Matters Committee, Hon. Aishatu Dukku, members of State House of Assembly, development partners such as UN Women, political parties and a number of civil society organisations. It was a useful platform for the presentation and dissemination of the legislative proposals aimed at enhancing women’s political representation in Nigeria to participants. An outcome was the commitment of NASS legislators to look into the proposals for possible sponsorship and an offer from the Nigerian Bar Association to offer further legal drafting assistance on the proposals.
