Economic Recession: National Assembly Invites President Muhammadu Buhari

The National Assembly will extend an invitation to President Muhammudu Buhari to appear before it at a joint session of both Legislative Houses to explain how he intends to remove Nigeria out from recession. The invitation came after the Senate on Thursday, 6th October 2016, concurred with a House of Representatives resolution passed on Thursday, 22nd September.

It would be recalled that the Senate had engaged in a series of debates on the State of the Economy in its first week of resumption from annual vacation, in its bid to tackle the current economic recession in the country. In addition to this, the Senate had also adopted a 20-point recommendation with minor amendments from a six-man Committee constituted to harmonize useful contributions from the debates. Some of the recommendations of the Committee included that the executive urgently prepare an Economic Stimulus Bill, lower interest rates for genuine investors, reconstitute the Board of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other critical agencies and engage in meaningful and inclusive dialogue with aggrieved Niger Delta militants. The Senate had also transmitted 8 key economic reform bills aimed at improving the economy to President Buhari last week.

In addition to hearing the address, the Leadership of the Senate is expected to present its recommendations from the debates on the state of the economy to the President at an undisclosed date.
