Senate Passes Bill Upgrading Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil To A Degree Awarding Institution

The Senate at its plenary session of Wednesday, 15 May 2019, passed the bill seeking to upgrade the Nigerian Police Academy, in Wudil, Kano State to a degree awarding institution. Notable provisions in the Bill include advanced learning for police officers with the opportunity of acquiring a higher education. It also seeks to develop the skills of police officers by preparing them for leadership, policing and community service.

Presenting the report on the Bill, the Chairman, Committee on Police Affairs, Sen. Tijanni Kaura (Kebbi:APC) informed the Senate that the Committee had adopted a legislative framework that allowed it to consult extensively with relevant stakeholders on the merits of the proposal. He also admitted having a holistic framework being that a public hearing was held to avail the general public with the platform to present their views on the Bill.

Sen. Kaura also noted the overriding support for the Bill’s passage by stakeholders who had made both written and oral submissions at the public hearing before concluding with the view that the Bill would reposition the Nigeria Police through proper training of its personnel. According to him, the bill, if passed, would provide a legal framework that will back the operations of the institution.
