Senate Summons The Minister Of Health Over Poor Healthcare Services In Nigeria

The Senate has summoned the Minster of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole over the poor state of healthcare services across the country particularly in Nigerian Teaching Hospitals following a motion titled “Alarming Report on poor quality of services in Nigerian Teaching Hospitals”

Presenting the motion at the plenary session of Wednesday, 8 May 2019, Sen. David Umaru (APC: Niger) noted with concern, the widespread cases of poor electricity supply, obsolete medical equipment, decayed infrastructure and other factors which have led to extreme difficulty in providing healthcare services to ailing patients.

According to Sen. Umaru, reports indicated that most Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria had been overstretched due to overcrowding, lack of adequate funds and personnel which is necessary for optimal performance. He also noted that the absence of requisite medical equipment and services, doctors, and other health professionals within such hospitals increased the mortality rate.

The Senate further resolved to mandate its Committee on Health to conduct an emergency investigative hearing on the state of healthcare services and report back within one week.
