The Senate at its plenary session of Wednesday, 17 February 2021, urged the President, Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency on insecurity across the country following the abduction of students at the Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State.
The resolution, which was adopted by the Senate, resulted from a motion moved by Sen. Mohammed Sani Musa (APC: Niger). In his submissions, Sen. Musa explained that armed bandits had invaded the school in the early hours of Wednesday,17 February 2021, and abducted students, even though the numbers were yet to be confirmed.
Other lawmakers, speaking in favor of the motion expressed concern over the failure of the leadership to address the increased rate of insecurity across the country. The Senate also called on President Buhari to consider the report of the Ad-hoc Committee on Nigeria Security Challenges adopted on 17 March 2020, and implement the resolutions therein as a holistic approach to the mounting challenges of insecurity.
