The Senate at its plenary session on Wednesday, 20 March, 2019 directed its Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the inconsistent application of electoral laws by Nigeria’s electoral management body after lawmakers expressed dismay over its conduct of the 2019 General elections .
The resolution was sequel to a motion titled “The Militarization of the Nigerian Electoral Process and the Inconsistent Application of Electoral Laws by INEC” where Sen. Dino Melaye expressed additional concern over the use of military personnel during the conduct of the 2019 General Elections. He warned that this could pose a “serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.”
In his submissions he alleged that INEC had conducted the 2019 General elections with a preference for candidates from certain political parties and faulted it for operating outside established laws. He also called for a Senate investigation into the matter.
