Senate Suspends Senator Ali Ndume

The Senate at its plenary session of Wednesday, March 29th 2017, suspended former Senate Leader and Chairman Sen. Committee on INEC, Sen. Ali Ndume (APC: Borno) after considering and adopting recommendations contained in the report of the its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.

Presenting the report on the floor of the chamber, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu (PDP: Imo), Chairman of the Committee, stated that it had complied with the principles of equity, fairness and justice during its investigation by receiving written submissions, documents and listening to oral testimonies from the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki (APC: Kwara), Sen. Dino Melaye (APC: Kogi), Sen. Ndume and other relevant parties.

Furthermore, Sen. Anyanwu noted that after careful examination of the documents available and consideration of evidence presented by the various parties, the Committee recommended that the Senate suspend Sen. Ndume for 181 legislative days as his action had brought unbearable disrepute to the Senate. However, the recommendation was amended and the Senate suspended Sen. Ndume for 6 months. The suspension was also stated to be of immediate effect (This is from March 29th ,2017).

It would be recalled that at the plenary session of Tuesday, March 21st 2017, Sen. Ndume had drawn the attention of the Senate to media insinuations on separate allegations of document falsification by Sen. Saraki and Sen. Melaye .
