Senate Summons Minister Of Labour And Employment Over Threat To Withdraw Bank Licenses

senateThe Senate has summoned former Senator and Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige over allegations that he threatened to withdraw licenses from commercial Banks who retrenched staff. According to several newspaper reports, the actions of the commercial banks are antithetical to a Federal Government directive to Banks to halt the sacking of its staff.

The resolution came as Sen. Rafiu Ibrahim (APC:Kwara), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions raised a point of order drawing the Senate’s attention to the aforementioned newspaper publications. Sen. Rafiu was also convinced that an invitation to the said Minister would enable the hallowed chamber understand the basis of the Federal Government’s directive as well as its proposed sanctions since the recruitment and disengagement of staff in commercial banks and the private sector is generally not within the purview of Government.

The Minister is expected to appear before the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Financial Institutions at a scheduled date.
