Senate Passes The National Institute Of Legislative Studies Bill, 2017

The Senate at its plenary session of 6 July 2017, passed the National Institute of Legislative Studies (NILS) Act (Amendment) Bill which seeks to among other things, change the name of the Institute to the “National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies”.

Presenting the report on the Bill, the Chairman of the Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters, Sen. Emmanuel Paulker (PDP: Bayelsa) stated that the Bill will empower the Institute to provide training and research services in legislative and democratic studies. Sen. Paulker explained in his submissions, that the Committee had conducted a public hearing on the bill and considered the submissions of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and key stakeholders in line with the legislative procedure of the Senate. After consideration of the report, the Senate approved the Committee’s recommendation and passed the bill accordingly.
