On Thursday 21st July 2016 the Senate passed the Nigerian Railway Corporation Bill, 2015. It would be recalled that the Senate commenced consideration of the Bill on Thursday 14th July, and deferred further consideration to 21st July, 2016. The Bill which is sponsored by Sen. Andy Uba (PDP:Anambra) seeks to repeal the Nigerian Railway Corporation Act, Cap N129 LFN 2004 to provide for the establishment of the Nigeria Railway Authority and to establish the framework for private sector participation in the provision of rail services as well as provide for the regulation of the railway sector. Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki (APC:Kwara) commenting on the Bill’s passage in the Senate said the Nigerian Railway Corporation Act 2004 is over 50 years old and not in line with modern economy. He stated that most developed countries have modern railway systems. He noted also that the Bill will have greater impact on the economy as the Bill is structured in line with current societal needs.
