The Senate has passed a bill seeking to amend the Public Holiday Act, 2004 (HBs 918 and 1529) to recognize June 12 as Democracy Day.
Leading the debate on the Bill, Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Ahmed Lawan (Yobe: APC) informed lawmakers that the bill seeks to amend item 5 to the Schedule by substituting “29th May” with “12th June” after the words Democracy Day and to bring the Act in tandem with current realities and exigencies of modern times.
Sen. Lawan stated that the Bill which originated from the House of Representatives was transmitted to the Senate for concurrence and passage.
