The Senate has resolved to alter the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to allow for the creation and establishment of State Police into the Nigerian Policing System as part of effort to curtail security challenges across the country after a motion was moved on the matter.

Presenting a motion highlighting various attacks on communities in several States across the country at the plenary session of Tuesday, 3 July 2018, Sen. Jonah Jang (PDP: Plateau) spoke profusely to lawmakers about the recent killings of indigenes of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in Plateau State. Although he commended the efforts of the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki (APC: Kwara) and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara (APC: Bauchi) for visiting the State following the attacks, Sen. Jang called on the National Assembly to implement measures that will curtail these killings such as the introduction of State policing.

The Senate expressed overwhelming support to the submissions of Sen. Jang, by condemning the mass killings and displacement of citizens from their host communities and urged the Executive to overhaul the security infrastructure of the country and develop an effective action plan that deals with terror attacks. The Senate further reaffirmed its commitment to the passage of all proposed legislations on Police Reforms in the National Assembly.

The Ad-hoc Committee on Constitution Review was mandated to present a Constitution amendment Bill proposing State Policing within 2 weeks.
