Senate Invites Heads Of Security Services Over Proliferation Of Firearms In Nigeria

The Senate has resolved to invite the Heads of Security Services and the Comptroller Generals of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) over the proliferation of firearms in Nigeria.

Presenting a motion titled “Proliferation of Dangerous Firearms in Nigeria”, at the plenary session of Tuesday, 8 May 2018, Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi (APC: Kaduna) expressed concern over the incessant attacks across the country stating that acquisition and use of firearms by unknown individuals during the farmers/herdsmen crises stating resulted from a violation of enabling laws and regulations that prohibits firearms possession.

Sen. Hunkuyi attributed the inability of the FG to control the proliferation of firearms within the country as contributing to the colossal loss of lives and destruction of properties. Furthermore, he warned that the present situation was capable of negatively impacting the economic activities of States facing challenges of security and the country in general if left unchecked and called on the Senate to address the issue.
