The Senate at its plenary of Tuesday, 7 May 2019 held a briefing session with the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Adamu over the state of insecurity in Nigeria.
Through a motion, Sen. Ahmad Lawan (Yobe: APC) informed Senate of the arrival of the Police Head who was admitted into its chamber for a briefing session held behind closed doors. Although extensive details of the briefing remains undisclosed, the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki (Kwara: APC) highlighted issues pertaining to armed banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, the discipline of police officers and the funding of the Nigeria Police Force as forming part of the deliberation.
Following the session, the Senate President stated that the Acting IGP had expressed his Agency’s commitment to the discipline of police officers who had violated provisions of the law; deliberated on ways to improve the security challenges on highways such as the Abuja-Kaduna expressway and how technology could be deployed for enhanced intelligence gathering. The Senate President also reiterated commitment to ensuring that adequate funds were provided for the Force where the need arises.
It would be recalled that the Senate at its plenary session of Thursday, 25 April 2019 invited the IGP to brief its chambers on the ongoing security crises following the murder of a British aid worker and her Nigerian Partner, and the abduction of 3 Nigerians at the Kajuru Castle Resort in Kaduna State.
