Senate Confirms Fifteen Nominees As Resident Electoral Commissioners (Recs)

The Senate on Thursday, June 01 2017 approved the confirmation of 15 out of 27 nominees for appointment as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee on INEC, Sen. Suleiman Nazif (APC: Bauchi) stated that prior to the screening exercise, the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Sen. Ita Enang had presented relevant documents such as the Curriculum Vitae(CV), Clearance from the Department of State Services (DSS), Police Report, Code of Conduct Acknowledgement Slip and other significant certificates belonging to the nominees.

Sen. Nazif explained that the Committee had reviewed and scrutinized the document, subsequently scheduling the screening of nominees for May 10th , 11th and 15th 2017 respectively. Accordingly, he informed the Senate that the 27 nominees were cleared by the relevant security agencies including the Police, DSS and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

According to the report, members of the Committee were satisfied with the qualifications, experiences and suitability of 15 nominees. Although the reason for the non-confirmation of the remaining 12 nominees was not stated, it noted that the Committee intends to forward the names of the remaining 12 nominees to the Senate for confirmation at a later date.
