Senate Calls On Un To Investigate The Killings Of Nigerians In Libya

The Senate at its plenary session of Tuesday, 9 July 2019, called on the United Nations to investigate the double airstrike at a detention centre outside Tripoli, Libya that left over 100 people, including 9 Nigerians dead.

Presenting a motion titled “The Death of Nine (9) Nigerian Migrants in Libya” Sen. Jibrin Barau (APC; Kano) stated that the detention centre which contained more than 600 people was attacked on Wednesday, 3 July 2019 killing mainly women and children.   He also noted that it was the second attack on the detention centre.

Sen. Barau explained that the attack, which has been described by the United Nations as “a war crime”, was a consequence from the ongoing conflict in the country and urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intensify efforts to repatriate Nigerian citizens from Libyan Detention Camps.

The Senate further called on the Libyan Government to immediately release and relocate refugees and migrants living in detention centers to safe shelters.
