The Senate at its plenary session of Tuesday, 23 January 2018, considered and approved the report of its Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND on the modalities of establishing Federal Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and Universities across Nigeria.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Jibrin Barau (APC: Kano) informed the Senate that during the course of its findings, the Committee had reviewed the mode of establishing institutions of learning across the country and discovered that the Federal Government had failed to consider the equitable distribution of tertiary educational facilities across the country. He explained that of the 36 States in Nigeria, 13 had no established Federal Polytechnics while there was an absence of Colleges of Education in 17 states.
Following the findings of the Committee, Sen. Barau sought the Senate’s approval on the recommendations below:
- That the 6 specialized universities whose operations were suspended should be allowed to resume its activities to create more educational spaces for qualified candidates;
- That Federal Polytechnics and Colleges should be established in the States without any of these institutions; and
- That the Federal Government should focus on upgrading already existing tertiary educational structures to specialized institutions.
It would be recalled that the Senate at its plenary session of Wednesday, 8 November 2017, among others, had mandated the committee to provide modalities for the establishment of tertiary institutions in the country following the debate of a Bill to establish the Federal Polytechnic, Kabo, Kano State (SB 407).
