Senate Approves And Adopts Its Legislative Agenda

The Senate at its plenary session of Thursday, 26 September 2019 approved and adopted its Legislative Agenda as efforts to strengthen parliamentary roles and practices.

During the deliberation, lawmakers unanimously commended the effort of the Ad-hoc Committee for developing a Legislative Agenda, noting that the sectoral interventions highlighted in the Agenda will promote effective engagement with the Executive, promote transparency and accountability, and serve as an effective legislative guide to the 9th Senate for the next 4 years.

Presiding over the session, President of the Senate, Sen. Ahmad Lawan (APC: Yobe) stated that the adoption of the Legislative Agenda of the 9th Senate will increase the legislative interventions of its Committees; ensure that the submission of sessional reports by committees are re-introduced and promote engagements with the Heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Sen. Lawan mentioned that the 9th Senate will focus on reforms in critical sectors that include reviewing the Universal Basic Education Act; amendments to the Electoral Act; and implementing initiatives that improve the quality of healthcare services in Nigeria. He further noted that the Senate will liaise with the Executive arm on the 1% Consolidated Revenue Fund allocated to the health sector in the 2019 Budget that was approved by the 8th Senate.

The 9th Legislative Agenda was first presented on Wednesday, 25th September, 2019.
