President Muhammdu Buhari has submitted a list of 43 Ministerial nominees for Senate’s screening and confirmation. In his letter communicated by the President of the Senate, Sen. Ahmad Lawan (APC: Yobe) at the plenary session of Tuesday, 23 July 2019, President Buhari stated that his submission as in line with Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Section 147(2) states that:
“Any appointment to the office of Minister of the Government of the Federation shall, if the nomination of any person to such office is confirmed by the Senate, be made by the President”.
President Buhari also mentioned that the 43 persons were drawn from the Thirty-Six (36) States of the Federation (including the FCT). However, seven (7) of these nominees are women representing Anambra, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau and Zamfara States. This is a slight improvement from the 6 female Ministers that were initially appointed in 2015.
Commencement of the screening and confirmation exercise holds from Wednesday, 24 July 2019.
