National Assembly Resumes Plenary

The Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday, 9 February 2021, resumed plenary session following its 6-weeks break. It would be recalled that both Chambers had adjourned to embark on the Christmas and New year holidays on Monday, 21 December 2020.

At the sitting of the Senate, Sen. Ahmad Lawan welcomed lawmakers from the break, noting that it will continue with its implementation of interventions in line with the Legislative Agenda of the 9th Senate. In his welcome remark, he commended the effort of Senate on the passage of the 2021 Appropriation which has already been signed into law.

Highlighting the priorities of the Senate for the coming legislative days, Sen. Lawan mentioned that focus will be on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, Constitution Alteration Bills and the Petroleum Industry Bill which are very crucial and critical legislations that need equal commitment and dedication from lawmakers.

In other to enhance transparency and accountability in the petroleum industry, he expressed optimism that all legislative interventions on the Petroleum Industry Bill will be concluded by the Joint Committee in a few weeks and passed before the end of March 2021. According to him, the legislative processes on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill and Constitution Alteration Bills will be completed by the end of April 2021.

Speaking on other legislative reforms, particularly in respect to the outbreak of a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and security challenges across the country, Sen. Lawan mentioned that the Senate will continue its engagements and collaborations with the Executive in order to address these concerns.

In the House of Representatives, the Speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajamila informed lawmakers of the death of its Member, representing Aba North/South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ossy Prestige (APGA) and that a valedictory session in his honour will be scheduled.

In honour of Hon. Prestige, the Senate and House of Representatives suspended it legislative activities for Tuesday, 9 February 2021 and will resume on Wednesday, 10 February 2021.
