House To Investigate Presidency’s Committee On Arms Procurement

The House Committee on National Security and Intelligence will investigate the Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement (CADEP) that was set up by the Presidency to review the process of Arms procurement and equipment for the Nigerian Army to tackle security challenges in the country.

Moving the motion under matters of urgent public importance at the plenary session of Thursday, 3rd November 2016, Hon. Chris Azubogu (PDP: Anambra) explained that the Presidencyhad inaugurated the CADEP on 31st August 2015 while the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) had inaugurated another Committee with a similar mandate on 19th October 2015 to investigate Arms Procurement. However, while the Committee set up by the ONSA submitted its report since February, 2016, CADEP had failed to report its own finding within the stipulated time frame of ninety (90) days,

Hon. Azubogu noted with concern that upon expiration of the 90 days time frame, the Presidential Committee further demanded two (2) weeks extension, which was granted to enable them, conclude their assignment. He stated that the inactions of the Committee contradicts the Federal Government’s policy on reducing the cost of governance as funds has been expended to ensure that members of the presidential committee perform its duties effectively and efficiently yet no meaningful progress has been made.
