The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Electoral and Political Matters to investigate the non-compliance by Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) of provisions in the Electoral Act, 2010 dealing with to Continuous Voters Registration(CVR).
Moving the motion titled “Need to Investigate the breach of the Electoral Act, 2010 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Continuous Voters Registration (CVR)”at the House plenary session of Wednesday, March 29th 2017, Hon. Benjamin Ikani Okolo (APC: Kogi) stated that the Commission had violated Section 9 (1) of the Act which provides that:
“The Commission shall compile and update, on a continuous basis, a National Register of Voters, in this Act referred to as the “Register of Voters” which shall include the names of all persons entitled to vote in any Federal, State or Local Government or Area Council election”.
Hon. Okolo was of the view that the Commission had breached this provision by failing to put in place, measures that would guarantee that the registration exercise continued across the country and as such urged Members to ensure that the matter was promptly addressed.
The Committee is expected to report back its findings within four (4) weeks for further legislative action.
