House To Investigate Diverted Donor Funds Given To Idps In The North East

The House of Representatives at its plenary session of Thursday, 23rd June 2016 resolved to investigate the alleged diversion of donor funds donated to Internally Displaced Persons, (IDPs) in the Northeast region.

Moving the motion under matters of urgent public importance, Hon. Ali Isa Jessie (PDP: Gombe) commended the military ‘s commitment in the fight against insurgency and appreciated the support provided by the international community and donor organizations. However, he expressed reservations against the alleged misappropriation of funds donated for the rehabilitation of IDPs stating that a large number of IDPs had been subjected to untold hardship as a result of their inaccessibility to food supplies and basic amenities which the funds were meant to provide. The attention of the House was also drawn to repeated allegations on funds diversion leveled against some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working in the region who are responsible for the implementation of programmes aimed at reviving development in the area. According to Hon. Jessie, the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), World Bank, the Australian Government, Saudi Arabian Government and well-meaning individuals had donated funds towards rebuilding the region.

The issue has been referred to the Committees on National Emergency and Disaster Management, Aids, Loans and Debt Management, IDPs, Refugees and Migrants in the North East and Disaster Preparedness to make their findings and report back to House.
