The House of Representatives at its plenary session of Thursday, 24th January 2019 stepped down a bill seeking to prescribe quotas for women in election.
Presenting the bill, Hon. Sadiq Ibrahim (APC: Adamawa) stated that that the bill seeks to prescribe women quotas for election into the Senate, House of Representatives and Area Councils of the Federal capital territory to support and enhance women participation and representation in certain elective offices.
Contributing to the Bill, Hon. Pally Iriase (APC: Edo) stated that the status quo must be changed, to reduce stigmatization against women. He added that women constituted more than half the population and should be encouraged to participate more in politics.
However, Mojid Alabi (APC: Osun) stated that it was insultive to women to prescribe a certain quota to them as the civil service is suffering because of this type of discrimination which came by way of the Quota system.
The Speaker ruled that the Bill be stepped down to allow members consult with their constituents over the issue.
