House Sets Up Ad-Hoc Committee To Investigate Running Cost Of All Arms Of Government.

The House of Representatives at its plenary session of Thursday, 26 April 2018 constituted an Ad-hoc Committee chaired by Hon. Sani Abdu (APC: Bauchi) to investigate the conditions governing the tenure of public officers under the Executive, Legislative and Judicial arms of the Federal government of Nigeria and inquire into the operational costs of running the three arms of government.

Presenting the motion on the floor of the House, Hon. Muhammed Musa Soba (APC: Kaduna) stated that there was an ongoing public debate about the operational cost of running the National Assembly as the legislative arm of government. He noted that this type of rancor always trailed each session of the National Assembly (Post- Proclamation) even though it was largely misinformed by assumptions, ignorance, and skewed facts by some elements and groups politically opposed to the institution of the National Assembly as an arm of government.

Hon. Soba further mentioned that it was interesting that the searchlight for transparency regarding the conditions of service public officers was often not beamed on the executive and judicial arms of government and was of the view that the selective targeting of the National Assembly by some promoters was unhelpful in the quest for truth and justice in the matter.

He concluded by saying that the outcome of the holistic investigation on the three arms of government would identify any illegalities, excesses or infractions by any arm and guide public debate on the subject matter which is currently one sided. He stated that the investigation would extend fair hearing to all arms of government, including the National Assembly.
