The House of Representatives has urged the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to take all necessary steps to rescue four Reverend Sisters who were recently kidnapped in Delta State after attention was drawn to the subject by Hon. Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe (APC: Imo)
Presenting the motion at its plenary session of Wednesday 21st November, 2018 the lawmaker highlighted the rise in kidnapping incidents in Delta State; the latest of which befell several persons including four Reverend Sisters of the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) in the state. Expressing concern over the disturbing rate of kidnapping and attack on the clergy and religious leaders across the country, Hon. Igbokwe queried the government for allowing armed men to continue to terrorize citizens despite calls for its intervention. The lawmaker expressed fear that if the kidnapped persons in question were not rescued or were found dead they could be dire consequences which could heighten religious tension in the country.
Sequel to the House resolution, its Committee on Police Affairs have been mandated to ensure compliance and report its findings back at plenary (within four weeks) for further legislative action.
