House Calls On The Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) To Release Outstanding Voters’ Cards

The House of Representatives at its plenary session of 14thJune,2016called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to release outstanding Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) that it failed to distribute before the 2015 General Elections.

Moving the motion, Hon. Shadimu Mutiu Alao (PDP: Lagos) raised concerns over INEC’s capacity stating that INEC had disenfranchised millions of Nigerians nationwide in the 2015 General Elections by failing to distribute PVC’s in certain areas. The lawmaker also called for the immediate distribution of PVC’s within INEC’s possessionand described INEC’s conduct as in variance with the intendment of the Electoral (Amendment) Act, 2010. He also urged the Federal Government to ensure that the electoral management body was well resourced to cope with its responsibilities.

The matter has been referred to the Committee on Electoral and Political Matters who are expected to make further legislative input.
