The House of Representatives on Tuesday, 7 July 2020 called on the Federal Government to set up Sex Offenders and Gender Violation Special Courts to enhance speedy trial of such cases.
Hon. Idem Unyime (Akwa Ibom:PDP) in raising this motion noted the rising cases of rape and gender based violence in Nigeria and acknowledged that there is a need for expedited hearing of such cases in order for victims to have their day in court and receive justice. He observed the need to review existing laws that speaks to these issues and for a uniform legal framework to be developed.
The House resolved to condemn acts of rape and gender based violence in the country, urged the Federal Government to designate Sex Offenders and Gender Violation Special Courts for accelerated hearings of cases of this nature and mandated the Committees on Women Affairs and Social Development and Judiciary and Human Rights to ensure compliance and report back in two weeks.
