The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government (FG) to constitute the Administration of Justice Monitoring Committee. Moving the motion at the plenary session of Tuesday, November 22nd 2016, Hon. Albert Abiodun Adeogun (PDP: Osun) expressed dismay over the failure of the Federal Government to constitute the Monitoring Committee in accordance with Section 469 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. According to him, the failure of the FG to constitute the envisaged Monitoring Committee has led to laxity in dispensation of justice and abuse of some provisions of the Act.
Citing Section 470 of the Act, explained that some of the functions of the Administration of Justice Committee included the speedy trial of criminal matters, decongestion of prisons, co-ordination of different organs of criminal administration, analyzing, collating and publishing information regarding the administration of Justice sector, among others, Hon. Adeogun also stated the FG’s inability to ensure that these provisions are adhered to could not enhance criminal justice delivery in the country.
The motion was referred to the Committee of Justice who are to report back their findings to the House within four (4) weeks for further legislative action.
