The 2023 Election Petition Tribunals/Courts and Appeals Review Workshop was held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja on 20th and 21st May 2024.
The workshop was organized by the Court of Appeal and PLAC with support from the European Union (EU), FCDO, IFES and UNDP
Participants at the workshop include, Chief Justice of Nigeria, GCON Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, The Hon. Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Hon. President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice M.B Dongban-Mensem, CFR, Other participants include, Justices of the Court of Appeal, Judges of High Courts, Election Petition Tribunals Registry Staff, Development Partners and the Media.
On the first day of the workshop, the first session was chaired by Hon. Justice H.S Tsammani, JSC and the paper presenter was Hon. Justice M.O Bolaji-Yusuf, PJCA, her paper was titled ‘The 2023 Election Petition Tribunals/Courts and Appeals: An Overview, the second presentation was delivered by Mr. Bukola Idowu, Executive Director, Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI).
On the second day of the workshop, the first session was chaired by Hon. Justice M.I Sirajo JCA and the paper presenter was Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Attorney General and Minister of Justice. The paper was titled ‘The Courts’ involvement in the Electoral process and their impact on improving election quality in Nigeria’. The second session of the day was chaired by Hon. Justice U. Onyemenam, PJCA and the paper was presented by Alhassan Umar, SAN (Independent National Electoral Commission). The topic of his paper was ‘The position of law and practice vis-à-vis the perception of the general public in the electioneering process’. The third paper of the day was titled ‘The workings of Tribunal Registry: An Overview, the chairman of this session was Umar M.Bangari, Esq and the paper was presented by Mrs. Josephine Ekperobe, Esq.
