A retreat of the House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights with the theme, ‘Institutionalising a Parliamentary Human Rights Protection Framework’ held on 23rd and 24th February 2024 in Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos. The retreat was organised by PLAC with support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
The retreat was attended by members of the Committee and staff of the Committee.
On the first day of the retreat, presentations made include Facilitating Parliamentary Inquiries into Human Rights Issues by Anthony Ojukwu, SAN, OFR,Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission and Domesticating Treaties, Covenants and Conventions on Human Rights: Reviewing Nigeria’s Outstanding International Obligations by Dr. Kelechi Akubueze.
On the second day of the retreat, other presentations made include Developing a Committee Work Plan by Dr. Aminu Umar and Effective Parliamentary Oversight on Fundamental Human Rights Protection: Examining the Executive’s Implementation of Key Laws in Criminal Justice by Rommy Mom, Executive Director of Lawyers Alert.
The Committee developed a communique at the end of the retreat to guide their activities in the cycle of the 10th National Assembly.
