A Strategy and Capacity Building Retreat Session of the 10th House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions took place at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja on 27th and 28th October 2023.The retreat was organized by PLAC with support from the European Union (EU)

Participants at the retreat include: Honourable Members of the Committee, the Committee secretariat including the Clerk, Deputy Clerk, Head of Administration and other support staff from the National Assembly.

On the first day of the retreat, presentations delivered include ‘An Overview of the role of the public petitions committee in addressing citizens’ grievances and complaints’ by Prof. (Hon) Jerry Ugokwe, Professor of Governance and Legislative Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and a Former Member, House of Representatives; and ‘Examining the role of the Public Complaints Commission vis-à-vis the Public Petitions Committee  by Hon. Abimbola Ayo-Yusuf, Honourable Chief Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission and  ‘Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms as a tool for Resolving Public Petitions and Complaints’ by Dr. Agada John Elachi, FICMC, FCIArb (UK),President, Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators.

On the second day of the retreat, other presentations made include, ‘Strategic/Work Plan Development for the Committee in the 10th Assembly’, Dr. Aminu Umar, Legislative Expert and Director at National Open University of Nigeria,   ‘Strategies for visibility and Public Awareness of the Committees’ Mechanism’ by Mr. Gbenga Aruleba, Chief News Producer, Host Focus Nigeria on AIT and Experiences, Lessons Learnt and Best Practices in Managing Public Petitions Committees by Michael Egwu, Retd/Former Clerk, House Committee on Public Petitions (2011 – 2017).
