The Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu (PDP: Enugu) at the plenary session of Wednesday, 14 June 2017 informed the Senate that the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) had discharged and acquitted the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki (APC: Kwara) of the 18 charges of false asset declaration leveled against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB). Sen. Ekweremadu while making the announcement, commended the effort of the Judiciary in ensuring that the rule of law served its purpose.
It would be recalled that the Code of Conduct Bureau had on September 2015 indicted Sen. Saraki on 13 count charge for breaching the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Section 2 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act. However, by February 2017, the charges increased to 18.
Among other offences, Sen. Saraki was accused of failing to declare some assets he had acquired while in office as the Governor of Kwara State and operating foreign accounts while he was a sitting Governor.
