The Ad-hoc Committee on the Legislative Agenda of the 9th Senate has presented its report for consideration and adoption.
Presenting the report of the Ad-hoc Committee at the plenary session of Wednesday, 25 September 2019, the Chairman, Sen. Adamu Aliero (APC: Kebbi) described the Legislative Agenda as a strategic framework that aims to strengthen the internal operations and processes of the Senate in carrying out its constitutional duties of legislation, oversight and representation.
Sen. Aliero also informed lawmakers that the Legislative Agenda contained legislative reforms aimed at improving Senate’s performance and effective engagement with other arms of government to achieve robust legislative interventions, institutional reforms and national development. The lawmaker further stated its highlights as including the following:
- Institutional Needs Assessment;
- Review of the Existing Standing Rules, 2015 as amended;
- Transparency and Accountability;
- Capacity Enhancement;
- Law making;
- National and Sub-national Initiatives;
- Sectoral Reforms and Interventions;
- Economic Growth: Diversification;
- Revenue, Budget and Appropriation;
- Communication Strategies and Civic Engagement;
- Internal and External Relations; and
- Implementation: Monitoring and Evaluation
In conclusion, Sen. Aliero explained that the Committee had carried out series of consultations with critical stakeholders comprising of Civil Society Organizations, Development Partners, Professional bodies etc. during the development of the Legislative Agenda.
The Senate has given a day extension for the adopting of its Legislative Agenda to avail lawmakers with more time to study the proposal and make contributions at its next plenary on Thursday, 26September 2019.
It would be recalled that the Senate had on Tuesday, 2 July 2019 constituted an Ad-hoc Committee charged with the mandate of developing a comprehensive Legislative Agenda that aligned with its constitutional roles.
