Nass Reaffirms Vote Of No Confidence On Igp, Threatens To Evoke Constitutional Powers In Joint Session

The National Assembly at a Joint executive session on Tuesday 5 June 2018 reaffirmed its vote of no confidence on the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and agreed that President Buhari should be held accountable for the actions of his appointees in its resolutions.

Senate President Bukola Saraki (APC: Kwara) announced the resolutions of the National Assembly as follows:

  1. That Security Agencies must be given marching orders to curtail the sustained killings of Nigerians across the country and protect the life and properties of Nigerians, as this is the primary duty of any responsible Government.
  2. That the systematic harassment and humiliation by the Executive of perceived political opponents, people with contrary opinions including Legislators, the Judiciary Police and other security agencies must stop.
  3. That there must be strict adherence to the Rule of Law and protection for all citizens by the President and his appointees.
  4. That the President must be held accountable for the actions of his appointees and be ready to sanction those that carry out any act which will ridicule or endanger the country and democracy.
  5. That the Government should show sincerity in the fight against corruption by not being selective and also prosecute current appointees that have cases pending against them.
  6. That the FG must protect and preserve the sanctity of the National Assembly and prosecute those who invaded the Senate to seize the mace.
  7. That the National Assembly should liaise with International Communities through the IPU, APU, ECOWAS, CPA, Parliament, Pan African Parliament, EU, UN, US congress and UK Parliament to secure Nigeria’s democracy.
  8. That the FG must ensure democratic elections are competitive and inclusive by eliminating all forms of fear and intimidation particularly as we approach the forthcoming 2019 elections.
  9. The National Assembly will work closely with Civil Society Organisations, Trade Unions and NGOs to further deepen and protect our democracy .
  10. The President must take immediate steps to contain the growing level of unemployment and poverty in Nigeria especially now that oil prices are on the increase .
  11. Both chambers of the National Assembly hereby pass a vote of  confidence on the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the entire leadership of the National Assembly.
  12. That the National Assembly reaffirms its earlier resolution of a vote of no confidence on the Inspector General of Police who has failed to preside over the security of Nigerians with disregard for the Constitutional authority of both the Executive and Legislature.

In addition the National Assembly also threatened to evoke its Constitutional powers if the President failed to address the above-mentioned resolutions.
