Senate Mandates Its Committee On Inec To Deliberate Further On The Rejection Of Resident Electoral Commission Nominee

The Senate has mandated its Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliberate further on the rejection of the nomination of Mr. Ahmad Bello Mahmud (Zamfara) as a Resident Electoral Commission (REC).

Presenting a motion titled “Rescission of the Senate Resolution on the Confirmation of the Nomination of Ahmad Bello Mahmud representing Zamfara State as Nominee for Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC)” at the plenary session of Wednesday, 29 November 2017, Sen. Kabiru Marafa (APC: Zamfara) refuted the claim in the report of the Committee on INEC which stated that the decision for rejecting Mr. Mahmud was based on careful deliberations and consultation. He informed the Senate that the Committee did not consult with him on the issue. Sen. Marafa further debunked the assertion by Sen. Tijanni Kaura (APC: Zamfara) that the nominee was from Kebbi State and not Zamfara State.

Following his submission, the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki (APC: Kwara) who presided over the plenary session stated that the resolution of the Senate to reject the nomination of Mr. Mahmud was premised entirely on the Committee’s recommendation and as such, he would allow the Committee to address the concerns raised by Sen. Marafa.

It would be recalled that the Senate at its sitting on Thursday, 23 November 2017 had rejected the nomination of Mr. Mahmud as nominee for REC.
