Bill To Amend Pension Reform Act, 2014 Scales Second Reading In House Of Representatives

A bill to amend the Pension Reform Act 2014 to exclude members of the Nigerian Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Prisons Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from the contributory pension scheme (HB 398) has passed second reading in the House of Representatives.

Leading the debate at plenary session on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, Hon. Oluwole Oke stated that the Bill is intended to exclude the above stated parastatals from the application of the contributory pension scheme.

Speaking further, he stated that the Government had an important role in protecting security agents and recalled that the House passed a Bill in 2010 excluding the Army from the contributory pension scheme before recommending same for the aforementioned parastatals.

Following the unanimous adoption of his submission, the Bill was referred to the Committee on Pensions for further legislative input.
