Senate To Investigate Its Presiding Officer And Senator Melaye Over Separate Allegations Of Document Falsification

The Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges is to investigate allegations of document falsification made against the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki (APC: Kwara) and Sen. Dino Melaye (APC: Kogi). Reports in some media news outlets contend that the Senate President had evaded customs duties by forging documents of a recently purchased vehicle meant for his use. In the case of Sen. Melaye, the same media outlets reported that he never completed studies at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, as he claimed and therefore queried the authenticity of his university certificate.

Citing Order 14 and 15 of the Senate Standing Rules, Sen. Ali Ndume (APC: Borno) at the plenary session of Tuesday, March 21st 2017, called on the Senate to investigate these allegations. Sen. Ndume explained that the media had been over taken by various reports that seems to question the integrity of the Senate. He noted that derogatory allegations against a Principal Officer or a serving Senator was not unusual and should be subjected to probe according to the norms of the Senate.

The Committee is expected to report back its findings in four weeks.
