The Senate on Thursday, 15th December 2016 refused to confirm Ibrahim Magu as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after an executive session. Speaking on the matter, Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki (APC:Kwara) said the Senate had deliberated on the screening of nominees for the EFCC and decided not to proceed with the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu who is currently the acting Chairman of EFCC based on an adverse security report on him. He noted that the Senate’s decision would be communicated to President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, other nominees to the board of the EFCC were referred to the Senate Committee on Anti Corruption for screening since there was no adverse security report on them.
It would be recalled that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo while acting in the President’s capacity in July had written to the Senate requesting the confirmation of the Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of EFCC. Mr. Magu has been serving in acting capacity since November 2015.
