The House of Representatives has condemned the killings of no fewer than 43 indigenes in Chawai Chiefdom, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State by insurgents. Moving the motion under matters of urgent public importance on Thursday, November 17th 2016, Hon. Simon Y. Arabo (APC: Kaduna) expressed concerns over the incessant killings by insurgents in his state.
Elaborating on the killings, Hon. Arabo stated that the incident occurred after heavily armed insurgents in large numbers, invaded the community on November 13th and 14th 2016 leading to the death of 43 people. He also mentioned that in addition to the loss of lives, the invasion had led to the infliction of severe bodily harm on some indigenes and destruction of property. He also urged the House to take urgent steps to avert further attacks by insurgents in the country.
It would be recalled that a similar motion declaring a state of emergency in Southern Kaduna was presented before the House of Representatives on October 19th 2016 where it resolved to:
- Call on the Kaduna State Government to declare a security emergency;
- Call on the Federal Government to set up a Military Strike Force and a military battalion; and
- Urge Security Agencies to intensify efforts aimed at apprehending the insurgents and bringing justice to all persons involved in the attacks.
Hon. Arabo’s motion was unanimously adopted and the House of Representatives agreed to:
- Restate the resolutions of October 19th 2016;
- Urge the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to victims of the attacks;
- Constitute an Ad-hoc Committee to carryout an internal security audit and report back to the House in eight (8) weeks; and
- Constitute a Committee to engage in a dialogue session on security with President Muhammadu Buhari.
