The National Assembly has transmitted the National Minimum Wage Bill, 2019 to President Buhari for assent following the Senate and House of Representatives unanimous adoption of the recommendations of its Ad-hoc Committees on Minimum Wage.
The Bill increased the national minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000. The National Assembly also urged the Ministers of Finance, Budget and National Planning to present the amount required for implementation of the new minimum wage to the National Assembly.
Highlights of the Bill include the establishment of a Tripartite Committee consisting of a Chairman, Secretary, 12 government representatives and organised labour groups who will make recommendations to the National Minimum Wage every five years. The Bill also contains provisions enabling aggrieved workers, Trade Unions and the Minister of Labour to seek redress in the National Industrial Court in the event of non-compliance.
The N30,000 minimum wage approved by the National Assembly is N3,000 higher than the N27,000 proposed by the Executive arm of government.
