In July 2022, a joint delegation of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and National Democratic Institute (NDI) conducted a Pre-Election Assessment ahead of Nigeria’s 2023 general elections and shared its findings and recommendations. The report offers 24 specific and actionable recommendations for key stakeholders to undertake before the 2023 elections, to ensure the process is free, fair, inclusive, and peaceful.
The report noted among other points, that the recent surge in voter registration numbers especially among young people, points to a renewed interest in political participation among Nigerians. It further noted that the 2023 elections are a departure from some of the political dynamics that defined previous polls, and for the first time since 2007, the presidential election will be an open contest with no incumbent.
