In Nigeria, the struggle for women’s inclusion in governance has been a persistent one with little progress and significant setbacks. Cultural norms, patriarchal systems, and socio-economic barriers have collectively hindered women’s participation in politics. Despite constituting nearly half the population in Nigeria, women’s participation in politics remains disproportionately low.
To address these gaps, there have been various legislative initiatives such as the Bill to create additional seats for women (Special Seats Bill) in the legislature which is a Temporary Special Measure (TSM) and Constitution Alteration Bill before the 10th National Assembly targeted at promoting women’s representation in elective office.
In celebration of Women’s Month, PLAC revisits some of its productions advocating for improved women’s representation in the Nigerian National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.
