The Bill which has generated\nstrong reactions from the public, proposes a framework regulating the use of\nthe internet and its intermediaries for the transmission of information in\nNigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading the debate on the Bill at the plenary session of Wednesday, 20\nNovember 2019, Sen. Mohammad Sani Musa (APC: Niger) explained that the Bill\nsought to address the threat and mitigate against the risk associated with\ninformation via internet networks by monitoring abuse and deliberate\nmisconduct. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his submissions, he mentioned the highlights of the Bill to\ninclude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Provisions for the issuance of\nregulations dealing with the transmission of false statements of facts;<\/li><li>Issuance of guidelines for\ninternet intermediaries and providers of mass media services; <\/li><li>Introduction of measures to allow\noffenders plead their case with a law enforcement department and seek further\nredress in appropriate courts; and<\/li><li>The provision of penalties for\ndefaulters.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen Musa stated that the Bill, if passed, would address the menace of\nfake news and falsehoods in media broadcast and transmissions.
