{"id":4021,"date":"2026-05-11T03:43:32","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T03:43:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/?p=4021"},"modified":"2026-05-16T07:57:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T07:57:31","slug":"plac-launches-guide-to-human-rights-and-public-interest-litigation-in-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/plac-launches-guide-to-human-rights-and-public-interest-litigation-in-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"PLAC Launches Guide to Human Rights and Public Interest Litigation in Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On <strong>Monday, 20 April 2026,<\/strong> Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) with support from the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) launched its <strong>Guide to Human Rights and Public Interest Litigation in Nigeria <\/strong>in Abuja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Guide, authored by PLAC\u2019s Executive\nDirector, Clement Nwankwo, is designed as a practical resource for lawyers,\ncivil society organisations and other actors seeking to use litigation to\nadvance human rights, accountability and access to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch brought together members of the\njudiciary, legislature, legal profession and civil society. <strong>Justice Emmanuel\nAgim<\/strong> of the Supreme Court of Nigeria chaired the event and highlighted the\njudiciary\u2019s role in protecting fundamental rights and expanding access to\njustice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also present were <strong>Dr. Mathew Ayibakuro,<\/strong>\nGovernance Adviser at FCDO, <strong>Hon. Peter Makinde<\/strong>, Chairman of the House\nCommittee on Human Rights,&nbsp; <strong>Hon.\nVictor Obuzor<\/strong>, Chairman of the House Committee on Civil Society\nOrganisations and Development Partners, and several others. Both lawmakers\nemphasised the importance oflegal and institutional support for rights\nprotection, accountability and collaboration with civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussions focused on the role of public\ninterest litigation in addressing systemic injustice, enforcing rights and\nstrengthening democratic governance. Participants also stressed the need for\nstronger collaboration between the bar, bench and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Guide outlines legal frameworks,\nstrategies and procedural pathways for initiating and pursuing human rights\ncases.
