Tinubu has long advocated for the decentralisation of policing in Nigeria, <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/200202250514.html\">a position he maintained even during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reiterated this stance at an\ninterfaith dinner in Abuja on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, where he urged members\nof the National Assembly to pass the constitutional amendments required to\nenable the creation of state police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 214 of the 1999\nConstitution establishes a single national police force and expressly provides\nthat <em>\u201cno other police force shall be\nestablished for the Federation or any part thereof.\u201d<\/em> As long as this provision remains unchanged, state police has no\nlegal basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue has already surfaced\nwithin the ongoing constitutional review process. Various bills proposing state\npolice have been consolidated into a single State Police Bill by the Senate and\nHouse Committees on Constitution Review.
