{"id":3930,"date":"2025-10-08T16:22:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T16:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/?p=3930"},"modified":"2025-10-08T16:22:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T16:22:24","slug":"conference-of-speakers-agree-on-strengthening-state-assemblies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/placng.org\/Legist\/conference-of-speakers-agree-on-strengthening-state-assemblies\/","title":{"rendered":"Conference of Speakers Agree on Strengthening State Assemblies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and in partnership with <em>Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) Project<\/em>, convened a 2-day Consultative and Validation meeting for the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja on 22<sup>nd<\/sup>-23<sup>rd<\/sup> September. The meeting provided a platform to validate the findings of a comprehensive Needs Assessment conducted across State Assemblies nationwide and to deliberate on strategies for strengthening legislative processes, fiscal reforms, technological advancement, and administrative independence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2-day\nforum involved in-depth discussions which identified and addressed critical\ngaps in the legislative capacity of the State House of Assemblies, some of\nwhich includes: inadequate infrastructure, staffing limitations, financial\nconstraints, and weak legislative processes. Participants carefully assessed the essential\ntools, skills, and resources that is required to enhance effective lawmaking, encourage\ncitizens engagement, and strengthen oversight functions in ways\nthat better position them to respond to emerging challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same\nvein, the\nSpeakers highlighted the urgent need to review and reinforce the institutional\nframeworks of state assemblies. Following extensive deliberations, they\ncollectively pledged to champion comprehensive reforms focused on strengthening\nlegislative capacity, enhancing financial and institutional autonomy, and\nimproving accountability. These reforms will prioritize building a legislative\ninfrastructure capable of independent budget management, robust policymaking,\nand transparent governance processes.
